J H U L A - Our Namesake
My mom sings beautifully. Growing up, I would wake up to her voice resounding through the house, singing Bollywood songs as she did her morning routine. Music was always a big part of her life - my grandfather was an incredible sitar player and they would regularly host music parties when he was alive. Her singing, him playing, everyone else joining in - these are some of the fondest memories that I have.
The sound of my mom singing a lullaby to me as a baby is another sound that has a special place in my heart. I asked her to translate it for me and this is her interpretation:
The word Jhula in this song is used to describe the cradle rocking the baby to sleep. It is a Hindi word that in other contexts is an actual swing. It can also be a verb describing the action of swinging.
When I was picking a name for this brand, Jhula kept sticking out as something special to consider. The motion of rocking back and forth, whether you’re being pushed by someone or swinging by yourself - it’s soothing. It transcends generations and can either calm us down or cause our stomachs to drop with excitement - it brings a smile to our faces. Also, what are any of our lives if not a series of pushes and pulls, in and out of hard and less hard seasons?
