After getting pregnant, I thought that the craziest bodily experience would be watching my body grow with the baby. That was until my milk supply started coming in and I could feel the liquid gold building up and being consumed over and over. It really is one of those experiences you cannot understand until you go through it.

One of my first childhood memories is yelling at my parents for naming me Smriti. No one could pronounce it in my pre-school class (it’s still hard for most adults) and it made me feel, even at such a young age, that I was different. As 4 year old me exclaimed, “why couldn’t you just name me Jessica!?”, I had no idea that figuring out my identity as a first generation American would be a lifelong journey.

My mom sings beautifully. Growing up, I would wake up to her voice resounding through the house, singing Bollywood songs as she did her morning routine. Music was always a big part of her life - my grandfather was an incredible sitar player and they would regularly host music parties when he was alive. Her singing, him playing, everyone else joining in - these are some of the fondest memories that I have.
